SOMALIA, Oltre 1500 abitazioni e 40 villaggi sulle coste nordorientali della Somalia sono stati distrutti dallo tsunami del 26 dicembre scorso costringendo 20.000 persone a riversarsi nelle bidonville cittadine; lo dice un rapporto sulla situazione somala dopo il cataclisma diffuso durante la conferenza del Un-Habitat, agenzia delle Nazioni Unite dedicata agli insediamenti urbani, in corso a Nairobi (Kenya).

L’onda anomala, innescata da un terremoto sottomarino a migliaia di chilometri di distanza nel sudest asiatico, provocò un centinaio di morti in Somali e, come affermano gli esperti, ha contribuito a peggiorare la situazione abitativa nel Paese, aumentato la popolazione delle baraccopoli. Già la situazione di sostanziale anarchia che vige in Somalia da 14 anni, dove ’signori della guerrà si contendono il potere con la violenza, ha creato un panorama urbanistico tutto particolare con quartieri sovraffollati, perché ritenuti più sicuri, e altri insediamenti del tutto abbandonati, veri e propri ’quartieri fantasma’.

Inoltre, dicono gli urbanisti e sociologi riuniti a Nairobi, dagli anni ’80 a oggi si è invertita la proporzione tra gli abitanti delle città e la popolazione rurale: nel recente passato il 75% dei somali erano pastori nomadi ma attualmente il 60% della popolazione abita nei centri urbani, in condizioni più o meno adeguate.
