Premio Sharjah de Cultura Árabe

El Premio Sharjah de Cultura Árabe se creó en 1998, por iniciativa de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. El Consejo Ejecutivo de la UNESCO aprobó los Estatutos del Premio y tomó nota de su Reglamento Financiero. De conformidad con una decisión adoptada por el Consejo Ejecutivo en su 155-ª reunión, el Premio se otorgará cada dos años, durante la celebración de la Conferencia General de la UNESCO.

La finalidad de este Premio es recompensar los esfuerzos de un ciudadano de un país arabe y de un ciudadano de cualquier otro país que hayan contribuido, por su labor artística, intelectual o de promoción, al auge y la difusión de la cultura árabe en el mundo.

El objetivo del Premio es conforme a la Constitución de la UNESCO, en virtud de la cual la Organización tiene, entre otros, el deber de fomentar el mutuo entendimiento entre los pueblos mediante actividades que favorezcan un mejor conocimiento de las culturas de pueblos diferentes y los intercambios entre distintas culturas.

Tres reuniones ordinarias del Jurado Internacional del Premio se celebraron en la Sede de la UNESCO y recompensaron los galardonados:

1-3 de octubre de 2001: Profesor Abdulaziz El Makeleh (Yemen) y Profesor Na Zhong (China)
8-9 de septiembre de 2003: Profesor Esad Durakovic (Bosnia-Herzegovina) y Profesor Bensalem Himmich (Marruecos)
1-2 de septiembre de 2004: Profesor Abdelwahab Bouhdiba (Tunisia) y Profesor Juan Vernet Genès (España).

El Director General recibió de Su Alteza el Jeque Bin Mohamed Al Qassimi, Gobernante de Sharjah (Emiratos Árabes Unidos), una carta con fecha de 23 de diciembre de 2002, en la que manifestaba su deseo de que el Premio Sharjah de Cultura Árabe se otorgara, a partir de octubre de 2003, todos los años y no cada dos, y que estuviera dotado de una asignación anual de 50.000 dólares EE.UU (25.000 dólares por galardonado). Se ha preparado ya la correspondiente enmienda a los Estatutos del Premio, que fue sometida al Consejo Ejecutivo en su 167-ª reunión.
