Era - L'astronauta dell'ESA Tim Peake ha scattato questa immagine notturna dell'Italia durante la sua missione di sei mesi, denominata Principia, a bordo della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale.

"Ci sono fasi di 'notti brevi' sulla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale - la luce del sole è quasi sempre visibile in questo momento. Nessun premio per indovinare dove siamo qui... " ha commentato.

L'orbita della Stazione Spaziale in relazione al sole cambia periodicamente, con il nome di angolo beta indica quanto tempo in ogni orbita di 90 minuti è esposta alla luce solare diretta. L'angolo beta è importante per la Stazione intera in quanto determina quanta energia presa dal sole può essere convertita in elettricità attraverso i suoi pannelli solari.

Questa immagine è stata scattata il 21 maggio 2016 durante un angolo beta elevato in cui la Stazione Spaziale è stata esposta quasi tutto il tempo alla luce del sole.

Il bagliore del sole è visibile all'orizzonte sulla sinistra, l'immagine mostra l'Italia e le isole della Sicilia (a destra) e della Sardegna e della Corsica (a sinistra) guardando verso est.
