El Ministerio de Defensa iraquí aseguró que al menos 50 milicianos insurgentes murieron ayer tras varias horas de enfrentamiento con las tropas iraquíes y estadounidenses en la zona de la Calle de Haifa, en el centro de Bagdad.

Segùn un portavoz del Ministerio, el general Ibrahim Shaker, 21 milicianos han sido capturados, entre ellos siete árabes extranjeros (tres sirios) y un sudanès.

Los combates comenzaron por la mañana y se prolongaron hasta las primeras horas de la tarde. "La operación de fue planificada para limpiar de terroristas la Calle de Haifa y los barrios vecinos", declaró el general Shaker.

El lugar es un importante foco de la insurgencia suní en el centro de la capital y se encuentra justo al norte de la fuertemente protegida Zona Verde, que alberga las Embajadas estadounidense y británica y numerosas sedes del Gobierno. Los aviones y helicópteros de combate estadounidenses han sobrevolado la zona de los enfrentamientos.
