Un rapporto dell’Unicef evoca importanti progressi sulla mortalità infantile.

Il 2006 si è chiuso con 9,7 milioni di bambini con meno di 5 anni morti nel mondo, è la prima volta che questo tragico risultato passa sotto i 10 milioni. Nel 1990 erano 13 milioni di morti. Il calo si inserisce nell’Obiettivo di sviluppo del millennio stabilito all’ONU nel 2000: ridurre la mortalità infantile di due terzi entro il 2015 rispetto al 1990. Una meta che, seppur più vicina, richiede ancora di salvare la vita ogni anno ad altri 5,4 milioni di bambini. Serve definire interventi da portare avanti e la loro efficacia perché la maggior parte di questi 9,7 milioni di giovani vite è prevenibile.

Se prima era l’Asia il continente con la mortalità infantile più alta, ora è l’Africa subsahariana e potrebbe salire al 60% nel 2015 in contra tendenza con il resto del mondo. I miglioramenti maggiori sono in Marocco, Vietnam e Repubblica Dominicana. In Cina fra il 1990 e il 2006 la mortalità sotto i cinque anni si è ridotta del 47% e in India del 34%. In Africa la riduzione della mortalità infantile è del 29% fra il 2000 e il 2004 in Malawi, e del 20% in Etiopia, Mozambico, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda e Tanzania.
